Homemade Chili Recipe + How To Host a Chili Cook-Off

National Chili Day is on the fourth Thursday of February each year, which lands on February 22nd this year. How are you celebrating? Give our homemade chili recipe the ultimate dinner test and check out our tips for how to host a chili cook-off.

Our chili recipes feature two kinds of meat and two kinds of beans. Do you prefer more beans over meat in your chili? How about venison? This recipe calls for equal amounts of ground turkey and beef, but you can easily substitute for venison.

If you are trying for a vegetarian option, replace the meat with more variety of beans. You can add baked beans and double the amount of the beans listed on the recipe.

Homemade Chili Recipe

Homemade Chili

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 jalapeños, chopped
  • 8 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can red kidney beans - 15oz
  • 1 can ranch style beans - 15oz
  • 2 cans diced tomatos - 30oz
  • 2 cans tomato sauce - 30oz
  • 2 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tbsp ground cumin
  • 2 tsp sea salt
  • 2 tsp ground pepper

  1. Add some cooking oil to your pan and dice the onion and bell pepper. Sauté until onions are soft.

  2. Mince and add garlic to your pan. Add your chili powder and ground cumin to the veggies and let the seasoning cook for roughly a minute.

  3. Add your ground turkey to the pan and brown your meat, while mixing into your seasoned veggies.

  4. Pour the ingredients from your pan into your slow-cooker first, then add the remaining ingredients.

  5. I suggest draining the juice from your cans of diced tomatoes, but leave the juice from your beans.

  6. Dice your jalapeños and place on top along with your sea salt and pepper.

  7. Cook on low for 7-8 hours.
